Uses

The hardware and software I actually reach for, on and off the clock. Updated whenever something changes rather than on a schedule, so treat any single entry as current only until it is not.

Development machine

  • MacBook Pro with an M3 Max, 36 GB of memory and 1 TB of storage.
  • Ghostty as the daily terminal, iTerm2 alongside it, and tmux for anything that needs to outlive the window.
  • Visual Studio Code for editing, Homebrew for everything installable.
  • Claude Code, Codex, and opencode for AI assisted work. Ollama when a model needs to stay on the machine.

Self-hosted infrastructure

  • Docker for anything that ships as a container.
  • UTM and VMware Fusion for local virtual machines, mostly to prove a change works before it goes anywhere real.
  • OpenSearch and Logstash for firewall log analysis, replacing a commercial log appliance. The full build is written up under Writing.

Everyday tools

  • 1Password for credentials.
  • Packages for building macOS installers, and Insomnia for poking at APIs.
  • mtr and dig, the first two commands I reach for when the network is the suspect.
  • Obsidian for notes. Brave day to day, with Chrome and Edge kept around for the sites that insist on them.
